Bridge House Inn
Cuisine Jamaican

Address 14 Crane Rd
Phone 876/965-2361

Frommers

This is a simple and very Jamaican restaurant. The cement-sided structure was built in the early 1980s; it's done with a beachfront motif and set within a grove of coconut palms and sea grapes. Patrons include mostly a cross section of Jamaicans, including the occasional conference of librarians or nurses. Menu items-everything is home style-include complete dinners (fish, chicken, curried goat, oxtail, stewed beef, or lobster) with soup and vegetables, served politely and efficiently by a staff of hardworking waiters. A separate bar area off to the side dispenses drinks.

Culloden Café
Cuisine International

Location Culloden District, Whitehouse, Whitehouse
Phone 876/963-5344

Frommers

Set beside the coastal road stretching between Bluefields and Whitehouse, this restaurant is housed within an aristocratic-looking pink-sided villa that originally functioned as the childhood home of its owners and chef. The cozy and artfully minimalist interior opens to reveal a view of a formal garden and putting-green lawns that sweep down to the edge of the sea in vistas that evoke a tropical view of the English countryside. The owners include Ann Lyons, a former editor at a New York City publishing house, and her British-born husband, John Belcher. Together, they direct a polite, well-rehearsed staff who prepare flavorful food that's considerably broader in scope-and more sophisticated-than anything else in the area. Menu items include locally caught fish that might be blackened, New Orleans-style; escoveitch of fish (a whole fish served in a peppery vinegar sauce); quesadillas stuffed with guacamole; or curried banana soup. Dessert might include Key lime cake or a frothy version of Pavlova-fruit and whipped cream in a meringue shell.

Jake's
Cuisine Jamaican, International

Location Calabash Bay, Treasure Beach, Black River & The Great Morass
Phone 876/965-0635

Frommers

Even if the sheer eccentricity of Jake's prevents you from an overnight here, you should absolutely dine here. Part of its allure stems from its raffish charm and unpredictability-you never know who might show up to divert and entertain you during a meal. (Likely candidates include everyone from Kingston's most prominent doctors to loquacious local philosophers who will predict your future through a rum-induced haze.) Jake's offers two distinctly different dining experiences: a romantic and secluded covered veranda out back, and a much more sociable front porch where tables are hand-painted in psychedelic patterns inspired by the 1960s. Menu items are announced on a chalkboard and might include pumpkin, red bean, or pepper-pot soups; fish tea (a clear broth checkered with herbs); and conch, callaloo, or cod fritters. More substantial fare includes plantain chips or carrot strips served with smoked marlin dip; a marvelous steamed fish in coconut-flavored cream sauce; tender pepper steak; and a revolving array of spicy jerk chicken, beef, pork, and fish.

Tiffany's
Cuisine Jamaican, American

Location Calabash Bay, Treasure Beach, Black River & The Great Morass
Phone 876/965-0300

Frommers
Carmen Sutherland is the hardworking founder of this pleasant, unpretentious restaurant beside the main street of Treasure Beach. Established in 1993, it occupies a colonial-inspired concrete building whose simple interior is painted in pale tones of blue and pink. Named after one of the owner's favorite books and films (Breakfast at Tiffany's), it features such items as soups, roast beef, T-bone steaks, and peppered steak, three different preparations of chicken (including a version inspired by Waikiki Beach, with pineapple slices), burgers, sandwiches, and salads.
