Anguilla
is not a shopper's paradise, although many interesting
island crafts can be found. Shells, for example,
beautifully crafted by local artisans, remind
that some of them might not be imported into
your country. Straw works, embroidery and crocheted
items are also very popular. High fashion is
on display at several of the major hotel shops
and many local shops carry a variety of island
colors and fabrics. For specialized crafts by
Anguilla artists, inquire at the hotels.
Prices
are often in ECS$, which means the Eastern Caribbean
States currency. That currency is used by several
of the smaller former British colonies in the
Caribbean, are widely accepted and many store
clerks know the conversion rates by heart or
else use handy calculators to figure them. In
nearly every case, establishments post whether
their prices are in ECS$ or not. When in doubt,
just ask.

Gifts
and Collectables
Rather than a large town center, Anguilla
is dotted with small villages. A shop
can be anywhere and have just about anything
from handmade craft items to international
treasures. Take a tour of our shops, you
never know what you might find.
Supermarkets
Shopping for groceries on Anguilla? There
are large grocery stores in The Valley
and smaller convenience stores all over
the island, some open till 9:00 PM and
on Sunday. |
Wine,
Liquor and Cigars
Because Anguilla is only a few miles from
French St. Martin many shops carry excellent
wine from all over Europe. We also boast
a fine rum created right here on Anguilla
and rums from all over the Caribbean.
It's worth shopping around.
Consider
bringing home a bottle of Anguilla's locally
produced rum, Pyrat. Available in a variety
of bottle sizes. The label fine print
says it's "imported" but "bottled"
in Anguilla. The parent company is Patron
Spirits Co., based in Las Vegas. The local
distributor is Anguilla Rums, Ltd. Available
at virtually any grocery or general merchandise
outlet on the island.
Gasoline
Stations and Tire Repair
If you have a rental car you are going
to need gas. Fortunately Anguilla has
gasoline stations all over the island.
For that occasional flat tire, check out
our speedy tire repair shops.
St. Martin/Maarten Day Trip
Take the ferry to Marigot for a day of
shopping, dining and gambling. It is only
about a 20 minute ride from Blowing Point
and the ferry leaves every 30 minutes.
